For some, following a Bible reading schedule helps them to stay on track. For others, having an online Bible study group to check in with gives them the needed accountability to keep up with reading. I tried those methods and they usually backfired for me. As soon as somebody tells me what I have to do and when, my rebellious side takes over. Also, I tend to fall behind with reading schedules and the pressure to get caught up becomes too much and I give up. Sound familiar?
But I did find something that works for me. And though I still struggle with getting off track, I have been the most consistent with my Bible reading using my own little method. It's almost too simple. I read 2 chapters each day that I am able. No schedule, no deadline, no checklist, no pressure, no catching up if I miss a day. For a while, I read 1 chapter from the Old Testament and 1 chapter from the New Testament. Currently, I'm reading 2 chapters at a time from the Old Testament.
Yes, this way is slow. But I don't like to rush Bible reading. I like to meditate on the message. Slow and steady - that suits me. If I read the Bible in 90 days, would I keep on reading through it after that? Or would I put it away for a while? I think it's better to be in the Word consistently, no matter the quantity. And may I say that busy moms with little ones should not feel pressured to even read 2 chapters if they can't - maybe just a psalm or a proverb or a verse is all you have time for - and that's OK!
Find the method that works best for you. Here are some to try:

You CAN read your Bible!

I've been limping along with SheReadsTruth. You can find them on YouVersion or at this link: http://shereadstruth.com/category/plans/promises/ One of these days, consistency will find it's way back to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! Yes, just keep on trying and praying - you'll get back to consistency.
DeleteWhy is it that reading the bible is the first thing we give up when we're pressed for time. Why not emails, or something else. I'm so guilty of that. Right now I"m on a pretty good schedule. I get up around 6, read my bible THEN drink my coffee and check emails and stuff. It's working so far but if I sleep in a day and don't have time I don't feel guilty about it because I have been good about getting right back on schedule the next day. Or I'll read before bed.
ReplyDeleteBig it's a good thing God is patient with us size hugs to you!
You are doing an awesome job my friend! Before coffee? Wow!! I have got to get back in the habit of getting up earlier. Notice that I don't have a post in this series called "You CAN Get Up Earlier" because I'm totally failing at that right now - LOL!
